Study medicine in Barcelona: yes or no?
“You know how people say you can’t live without love? Well, oxygen’s even more important.” You know who said that? The one, the only, the unforgettable Dr House. Trusted doctor to millions all over the world; GP to thousands of families in Spain. And he never had a clue.
“I don’t want love.” “Okay. You want breakfast?” “Can I have four pancakes instead of three?” That was another genius of fictional medicine: Dr Shaun Murphy, The Good Doctor. We’ve always known doctors are clever people with good ideas.
Think there’s a white coat or green scrubs in your future? Then, studying medicine is for you! And Barcelona is the best place to do it. Not just because Barcelona is a spectacular city, but because it also has some of the best universities in Spain to turn you into the next House, Shaun Murphy or Meredith Grey.
Study medicine in Barcelona: Yes!
Barcelona is cool, trendy, and hot. It’s calm and it’s wild. It’s a place you can be who you want, where you want and when you want. Studying medicine in Barcelona means living in an open, cosmopolitan environment, but it also means learning from the best. These are the top universities for studying medicine in the Catalan capital.
The famous UB. It’s considered the number one university in Spain for medicine. Not bad, huh? Plus, it’s right in the heart of the city, so it doesn’t get much better. Ah, and it’s public!
As if that weren’t enough, it has agreements with Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, MútuaTerrassa University Hospital, Bellvitge University Hospital and Hospital Clinic Barcelona, so you can do your residency there. Can you imagine?
The UAB. Like the UB, this university is also public and ranked just behind the UB among the top universities in Spain for studying medicine. It isn’t in the centre, but it’s just a few minutes from the city. A couple stops on the metro and you’re there.
Also like the UB, it has agreements with hospitals in the city, in this case the ones nearby like Vall d’Hebron Hospital, Hospital del Mar, Hospital Taulí, Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol and Hospital de Sant Pau.
The UPF. This university is also public and among the best in the country for studying medicine, a renowned institution. In fact, the doctors that train there have a very good reputation.
The mark to study medicine there in 2021 was just slightly lower than the other universities, but it was still 12.758 out of 14.
Apart from these three in Barcelona, there are also other universities where you can study medicine, for instance the Central University of Catalonia and the International University of Catalonia. Both are private and have top-notch specialised programmes, so either one is also an excellent option.
